Participating is simple

All you need is a four-page summary of your business idea. If you’re wondering how to structure this, don’t worry. We’ve created a template that guides you through the process.

Students, researchers and alumni of universities and research institutions in Germany can submit their ideas as individuals and in teams.

We like ideas and technologies that have the potential to transform the chemical industry of today. That includes for us ideas that originate from disciplnies like chemistry, chemical engineering, industrial biotech, material science but also digital. Timeline

The following dates are important for you. Block these days already in your calendar, if you are planning to participate.

Our Business Model Workshop, Pitch Training and the Regional Semi-Finals are full-day in person events that will be hosted regionally. We will assign you to the geographically closest locations and let you know accordingly.

For the grand final, we will invite all teams to North Rhine-Westphalia to celebrate your achievements at our Grand Award Event.

Idea Submission Deadline

Please submit the submission template including your ideas until 30 March 2026 (23:59h CET) via upload to our database.

14 April 2026

Business Model Workshop

A full day workshop that will give you access to top-notch industry experts that will individually help you to develop and refine your ideas further.

6 May 2026

Pitch Training

You will bring your presentation skills and the storyline of your pitch to the next level with the help of professional pitch trainers.

20 May 2026

Regional Semi-Finals

You will get the opportunity to present your ideas on stage at Semi-Finals hosted by our regional partners. The most promising teams will be invited to present their ideas at the Grand Award Event in NRW.

25 June 2026

Grand Award Event

The grand final of From Lab to Market Challenge. Present your ideas on stage in front of a large audience from academia, industry and capital providers and win amazing prizes.

Who can participate?

Students, PhD students, Post-docs, research assistants, professors and alumni with clear connection to a German university or research institution are eligble to participate individually or as a team. Multiple ideas may be submitted. If successful, however, a maximum of one proposal per participant will be awarded a price.

When is the submission deadline?

Only fully completed proposals received before 30 March 2026 (23:59 CET) will be considered. Incomplete submissions or submissions exceeding the specific scope cannot be considered.

How exactly can I participate?

Register for our challenge, download and fill in the idea submission form. Submit the complete proposal to challenges@chemstars.de before the submission deadline.

Can I have my idea checked in advance?

No, it is not possible to have your proposal checked in advance, as this would distort the competition.

Is my idea safe?

Yes. All parties who learn about your idea are bound to secrecy. And we will never ask you to disclose any confidential information in public.

May multiple ideas be submitted?

Yes, multiple proposals may be submitted per participant/ team, but a maximum of one proposal per participant/ team can win a prize.

Does my idea have to lead to a product or may I also participate with ideas for services?

Both, proposals with product and service ideas can be submitted.

I have already submitted an EXIST application with the idea. Can I still participate?

Yes, you can. A submitted EXIST start-up grant or research transfer application is fine. However, proposals from participants/ teams that have received approval on their EXIST application prior to their application to the From Lab to Market Challenge are excluded from participation.

Does winning a prize come with further obligations?

At least one representative from each winning team must attend the award ceremony and present their idea to the public. The idea may be reported on by the organizers of the competition within the framework of public relations. Of course, no confidential information will be published and the rules of good journalism will be respected. The payment of the prize money is not connected to any further obligations. However, further development of the ideas is desired and will be supported even after the end of the competition.

Who is behind the competition?

The competition is organized by chemstars in collaboration with regional partners greenCHEM, koala, QuinCat, chemSPACE and Forum Rathenau.

What are eligible submissions?

Submitted ideas must have been developed independently by participants and must not infringe the rights of third parties. Ideas that have received funding through regional or federal programs like VIP+, GO-BIO, EXIST or similar funding programs cannot be considered. If you have applied for but not yet received funding, you may participate.

Publicity

Participants agree to present their idea at the award event and contribute to press work. This specifically excludes confidential information.

Are there any exclusion criteria?

Yes. Your submission will not be accepted if:

- Your submission form is incomplete
- Important information is missing in your proposal
- The conditions of participations have been violated
- An EXIST Application has already been approved with the idea
- The idea has already been funded by any other grant.

How is my submission evaluated?

Since there is an explicit call for ideas at an early stage of development, the maturity of the ideas in not a decision criterion. The jury will make its decision based on the following criteria:

- Creativity and innovation
- Research relevance
- Customer benefit and market potential
- Chances of realization

Can I also participate as an individual?

Yes, both individuals and teams can submit ideas.

Who will evaluate my idea?

We have a two-fold evaluation mechanism:

First, a jury of people who bring professional expertise in various fields will evaluate the ideas based on the submitted forms.

Second, there will be an audience voting at the Grand Award Event. Both evaluations combined will determine the winners of the prizes.

Can I participate in other competitions with my idea?

Yes, participation in the From Lab to Market Challenge is independent of participation in other competitions. However, if the submitted ideas has already won awards in other competitions, participants must state this in their application.

What are the prizes?

Are there any other benefits besides the prizes?

Yes, all submissions are reviewed by experts. In each case, you will receive valuable feedback, important contact recommendations and support in implementation. In addition, you get to meet like-minded people who are eager to make an impact. The top teams will receive coaching by experts in a full-day workshop, pitch-training and the chance to present at our award event. If you like, we will certify your participation in the workshops & trainings, too.
